This Trust Idea blends a diverse cross-section of found material to playfully explore the intersection of trust, coercion and democracy.
Initiated by early observations that the nations who dealt with the Covid-19 pandemic most successfully were those who had the highest levels of trust between their citizens and institutions, and those nations with the worst infection rates were those where the levels of public trust were at their lowest – places where nobody believes their politicians nor their newspapers.
This Trust Idea presents a playful and provocative layering of complexity intended to be consumed collectively and discussed at length afterwards.
This Trust Idea is a co-commission between Allenheads Contemporary Arts Call Centre residency and The Star and Shadow Cinema Micro Projects in 2020.
The Video was first screened by Side Cinema in Newcastle upon Tyne as part of their Collective Now season in 2021.
The Pamphlet has been produced and distributed as part of Middlesbrough Art Weekender in 2021.

Below is a recorded post-screening conversation between invited guests Elaine Drainville, Mwenza Blell, Lindsay Duncanson, artist Andrew Wilson, hosted by SIDE Cinema programme curator Dawn Felicia Knox.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions we were unable to welcome a full audience within the cinema. The event was however live-streamed reactivating the cinema as a place of connection and collective conversation.
